I did follow the steps in that PDF you provided, but I cannot get my phone detected ether. Any thoughts? - On PC you need to download specific USB app. On Mac download Android File Transfer app. Make sure to connect directly from computer to phone, not gear. The gear doesn't support data.
- A small correction, this post was not in regards to getting the phone connected as a few people have assumed. This is regarding the microUSB jack on the bottom of the gearVR. So the phone would be put into the headset and then the headset would be plugged into the computer. I had the phone by itself working with ADB without issue, it was the gearVR that would show up as an 'unknown device.' I'll try again with the samsung driver listed in the PDF and see if that works, but I was fairly sure I already had that installed.
- The USB port does not support Mass Storage-like connections. It is only intended for HID input and power towards the phone, not for data transfer.
- I think the connections do no exist on the unit and all they did was make a pass though to simply power the phone with the connector. Very lame. The message you see is standard when plugging a device in a PC, regardless of data enabled or not.
Another plus for my generic VR unit I recently bought. Far less immersive, but far more functional in regards to media use and storage. - The USB port does not support Mass Storage-like connections. It is only intended for HID input and power towards the phone, not for data transfer.
I transfer data through the USB on my S6 without any problems. - Direct connect to phone is not a problem. But the gear VR usb does not allow data.

Not via the Gear VR you don't. - The USB port does not support Mass Storage-like connections. It is only intended for HID input and power towards the phone, not for data transfer.

Which was my point. The Gear only powers the phone and has no connectivity to support data. This means rather than use a standard micro usb connector design, they went out of their way and created a connector just for power. This means they apparently did NOT want people to be able to use external storage.
I worked in contract manufacturing for four years (not very fun) and part of my bill of material coverage was cables and connectors, so have experience in this. - Can anyone confirm that the usb connector on the bottom of the S6 gearVR can be used for usb hid input?
I want to send usb hid data to the S6 gearVR. I know I can do this by directly connecting to the phone, but I want to insert the phone and then connect it to a usb hard wired controller using the usb port on the bottom of the gear vr.IndoTraq.com
'Combining indoor tracking with virtual reality to give a whole new experience' - As noted, the Gear VR does not allow data. It's only use is to maintain power to the gear so it doesn't suck the phone power dry.
And yes, being able to transfer data to/from the S6 while plugged into the Gear Vr would have been very useful for everyone. Developers and users alike. - Seems they wanted this as closed as possible, hence the custom connector design that negates data connectivity, or even charging the battery? Kind of makes you wonder if they will not stop the ability to put your own content on the device at some point. I hope that is just a joke.

Of course they want it as closed as possible. They are protecting their ecosystem as competition is fierce. You should expect this. I mean, surely you would not expect a company to spend billions of dollars on this technology to then let it be free reign. You won't see the Project morpheus being able to be used on the Xbox either.
If you remember when the Play station 3 came out the first year of sales they were actually losing money on every system they sold before they started making any money on each sale, due to the tooling and building of the system.
It's all about money and it always will be about money and I for one think we are lucky to have Oculus, Samsung, Facebook all together as one team.
it may look closed now, but also remember that they ahve partnered up with some major brands such as FX, Dreamworks, Warner, 20th Century fox etc and we will soon enough see massive collaborations. Those companies would not be teaming up and spending billions of dollars for a system that does nto close off their product. otherwise they would be building their apps for those plastic chinese viewers.
For the amazing content we will soon see we need these major brands spending billions on making this new stuff and for the film studios alone that means changing all their camera operating systems, hiring specialists, hiring 360 operators, all sorts. That type of investment needs security and OCulus is offering them that by closing it all off.
Once the consumer market is established and all the players have their devices out in the public, that is when you will start seeing their ecosystems being opened up to mass storage and content streaming and content sharing etc but for now they need to protect their intelect and the way their products are used so that it does not get out of hand before the game is being played and everyone has showed their cards.
Personalyl I think it is exciting. - I think if they make it too closed it will actually hurt them. The generic devices are getting better and I already have a generic VR solution that is more appealing to me for movies. More will release as well and likely not long before a sub $100 solution that provides adequate immersion, but without the closed system and not stuck to one device.
Cardboard could be the global UI for it, but has it's own problems and limited design. Cmoar is the closest to getting the UI right and the needed image setting options to cover varied display sizes and headsets. At some point there will be a non closed solution that will trump a closed system due to more freedom.
Agreed though on their business model intent. I was just hoping I was a little bit wrong on it. Let us hope they do not close of side loading our own media
Frankly, if they would just provide a 2D web browser I would shut the heck up and be happy, since I could watch Youtube there and have account access. - As noted, the Gear VR does not allow data. It's only use is to maintain power to the gear so it doesn't suck the phone power dry.
If you plug this into a PC, a device definitely shows up. Which should mean that there's a bit more than just power going on there. Exactly what that means i'm not sure yet, but there is something there. - As noted, the Gear VR does not allow data. I thought the same thing some time ago way back, but you can take any device with USB connectivity or a dumb USB hub and it will show up on most computers as 'something' (depending on what drivers and bios settings in some cases). - USB hid input like USB mice and USB keyboards work on the GS6 GearVR port. Just plug them in before putting the phone in.
